Method

Prepare and bake
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and butter a 9x13 baking dish generously.
  2. Toss the apple slices with granulated sugar, flour, and cinnamon, then pour the apples into the baking dish.
  3. In a bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, both sugars, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cut in the cold butter with your hands until the mixture forms large, butter-streaked clumps.
  5. Pour and spread the crumble topping over the apples to cover evenly.
  6. Bake 55-60 minutes at 350°F until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling bubbles at the edges.
  7. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.

Notes

For the best crumble, keep the butter cold and use large clumps so the topping stays crisp even as the apples bubble. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator up to 4 days; reheat in a 350°F oven until warmed through. Freezing is not recommended for best texture. For a lighter option, use half whole-wheat flour in the topping while keeping the oats and butter amounts the same.
