Prep
- Preheat the oven to 375F and grease a 9x13 baking dish, so the crumble doesn’t stick when you bake it.
- Peel and slice the apples, then spread them in the prepared baking dish.
Make the apple filling
- Toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, and lemon juice until evenly coated, then spread the mixture into the dish.
Make the crumble topping
- In a bowl, combine all-purpose flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt, then add cold cubed butter and cut until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
- Scatter the crumb topping evenly over the apple filling so it bakes into a golden layer.
Bake
- Bake 35-40 minutes at 375F until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling at the edges.
Rest and serve
- Rest 15 minutes to thicken the juices, then serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
Pro tip: cut the cold butter into the oat mixture until you see small pea-sized chunks—those create bigger crumble clusters. Store covered in the refrigerator up to 4 days; reheat in a 350F oven until warmed through. Freezing is not recommended for best crumble texture. For a lighter option, use a plant-based cold butter substitute and keep everything else the same.
