Ingredients

Canned apple pie filling
  • 2 can (21 oz) apple pie filling Use canned apple pie filling (not the pie crust filling).
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp allspice
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
Oat crumble topping
  • 1.5 cup rolled oats Rolled oats create the classic crisp, clumpy topping.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup brown sugar Pack the brown sugar for deeper flavor.
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.75 cup unsalted butter Use cold butter, cubed, for chunky crumble clumps.
Serving
  • 1 vanilla ice cream Serve scoops alongside warm crisp.

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan
  • 1 oven

Method

Prep and heat
  1. Preheat oven to 375F, then grease a 9x13 baking dish.
Season the apple filling
  1. Stir cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and lemon juice into the canned apple pie filling, then spread it evenly in the prepared dish.
Make the oat crumble
  1. Combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt, then cut in cold cubed butter until chunky clumps form.
Bake
  1. Scatter the crumble generously over the apple filling, then bake for 30-35 minutes until the topping is golden and the filling bubbles around the edges.
Rest and serve
  1. Rest for 5 minutes, then serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

For the crispiest topping, keep the butter cold and stop mixing once chunky clumps form—no need to make it uniform. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container for up to 4 days; reheat in a 350F oven until warmed through. Freezing is not recommended for best texture. If you want a lighter option, use reduced-fat butter for the crumble (texture will be slightly less crisp).
